The Atlanta Kookaburras headed further south on the weekend hoping to keep their winning record for 2007 intact against fierce rivals the Florida Redbacks and new kids on the block the Ft Lauderdale Fighting Squids.
In warm conditions for footy the Kookas with several new players in their team were combining well to keep their noses in front through to just before the half way point of the Florida game. Damien Sheehan, Curtis Jones and Brent Kewley figuring in much of the play for the Kookas were standouts. The home team were not to be denied however and launched into a telling third quarter goal spree that was to be the difference in the game at the end.
The Kookaburras tried hard in the last term and fought back to a 7 point deficit thanks mainly too Sheehan moving forward and kicking three long goals but to no avail and the traveling Kookas went down fighting to much improved home team.
Straight after this game the Kookas played against the newly formed Ft Lauderdale Fighting Squids in a 2 x 20 min friendly. For the Squids it was their first real game against another team and they had left the friendly part of their game at home.
The Kookas after putting everything into their first game were no match for the fresh and very skilled FTL outfit and went down, but were not disgraced.
Fort Lauderdale Squids 5.10 11.10 (76) Atlanta Kookaburras 1.0 3.2 (20)
So back to reality for the Kookas in Florida, again realizing that unless you travel with a solid squad of players winning is always going to be very difficult.
