Lady Kookas go down fighting
Monday, 13 October 2008

The Atlanta Lady Kookaburras winning streak came to end Sunday in a very cold and windy Colorado Springs, CO. The three time National Champions had won their two pool games on Saturday to advance to the semi finals Sunday morning where they easily accounted for the Milwaukee Lady Bombers. Into the final that had to face the visiting team from the far north Calgary, Canada

The Calgary Kookaburras (yes they used the same name as us remarkably) brought a strong squad of 23 players and although the Atlanta team were still favorites losing Sue Marsh to a shoulder injury in the semi final meant they could only muster 12 players onto the field for the Grand Final.

In the final the Lady Kookas started slowly allowing four goals to one in the first half of the game as they battled against the strong wind. The Atlanta team regrouped at the break though and slowly hauled in their opponents in the second half. But the win was not to be and the Atlanta ladies ran out of time as they peppered the goals looking for that match winning goal.

In the men's games the Kookaburras played Philly for a loss on Saturday before having a tidy win against Golden Gate. On Sunday morning they faced St Louis still with a chance of making the final but fell short going down by 12 points.

The weekend in Colorado was superbly set up and organized but unfortunately the weather didn't play its part as games on Sunday were played in frigid rainy conditions and Sunday was just as cold and uncomfortable.

More news and scores to come later when we thaw out.
