Tuesday, 16 October 2007

The Atlanta Lady Kookaburras have again reigned supreme at the USAFL National Championships winning their third National title in a row. The Lady Kookas had solid wins on Saturday against rivals Milwaukee and Arizona then produced a perfect day of football on Sunday. The Lady Kookas showed why they are the envy of USA footy by shutting out the first time visiting team in BWE/Calgary in the morning game then doing the same in the Grand Final against the qualifying Arizona Lady Hawks. More impressive is that the Lady Kookaburras had seven rookies in their team of fourteen players this year.

The Lady Kookas were sensationally led by captains Judith Stein and Dewi Mitchell and combined with great team work in all their games that brought huge compliments from officials, opposition teams and the supportive crowd. To cap off a big day Jenny Sarbacker was awarded Best & Fairest player for the weekend games along with fellow USA Freedom player Erin Welsh from Arizona. The icing on the cake was Cathy Reinhardt winning the Grand Final game MVP award for a sensational game of footy as the Lady Kookaburras first rover.

The Lady Kookaburras remain undefeated and although pressed by all other teams during this the toughest weekend of the year, they continue to set the standard for women's footy in USA. Congratulations Ladies.!

The men's team produced their best football of the year also to have their best result at the USAFL National Championships since 2001. The Kookas playing in Div 2 defeated the Nth Carolina Tigers in a nail biting win Saturday morning before lining up against their fiercest of rivals the Nashville Kangaroos in the afternoon. The Kookas played a huge game winning by 30 points with Damien Sheehan, Ed Robinson, Curtis Jones, Ross LaRosa and Mike Frost all playing great games.

On Sunday the Kookas faced the Minnesota Freeze and after some early goals to the opposition, got back into the game in the second half. The Kookas went down finally however but were far from disgraced bringing much praise from coach Mike Powers and those in attendance. Minnesota went on to win the Div 2 title later in the day.
