Saturday night saw the announcement of the Kookaburras 10 year team to coincide with the USAFL's anniversary celebrations. It was also a time for reflection and acknowledgement of those that have made the Kookaburras one of the more revered clubs in the US. Former club President and club founder Mike Powers and current President Wayne Kraska heralded over proceedings recalling who, what and when things had happened since 1998 when Mike had first organized training sessions at Dobbins Air Force base in Marietta GA. With the help of club historian Marty Hyder many stories of the past were touched on from how the team was named to how the Nationals came to Atlanta and why it was such a success.
The 10 year team players announced in their positions gave up a few surprises and few that were not. Named as Coach of the team was Steven Thomson. The former Kookaburras centerman known simply as "Thommo" coached the Kookaburras to a Div 2 runner-up medal at the Nationals in 2001 and was awarded the honor of as Head Coach of the 10 year team. Brent Bacon was named as Captain of the team positioned at Full Forward where he had kicked 69 goals in his career and led the Kookaburras for a record three years straight.
The team of 18 players on the field and six interchange players was selected from all players that had played for the Kookaburras in the 120 games the club has participated in. Here is the team in their postions.
